Kamala Beach

Approximately two kms in length, quiet and not too crowded, Kamala Beach is a Muslim fishing village set amidst coconut trees, on the north of Patong. Tourist development on the beach is unobtrusive and the village is still dominated by a Muslim graveyard and a police outpost.

The northern end of the beach is nicer for swimming. At the same time you can enjoy seeing traditional scenes of fishermen tossing their nylon nets into the surf. The beach remains pretty undeveloped as shown by flocks of buffalo coming down to the beach to cool off in the afternoon.

The beach has a varied selection of accommodations ranging from guesthouse to international class, and a number of small Thai restaurants specializing in succulent seafood. Kamala Beach has various souvenir shops offering a wide variety of silk fabrics in ties, scarves and sarongs, and some beautiful pieces of woodcarving. Included are hand-painted fans, stone-carvings, lacquer ware and interior design items. Modest clothing should be worn when walking in the village, and topless sunbathing on the beach would be offensive to the local, predominantly Muslim, population.

During the daytime regular bus service to Kamala Beach is available, or you can go by tuk-tuk service to Patong and Kamala Beach is only five kms away on the new road.
