A bustling and flourishing province, Khon Kaen is located in the heart of Thailand’s Northeast, sometimes called Isaan. Khon Kaen offers a large number of historical and cultural attractions, as well as several virgin jungles, winding rivers and mysterious caves. One of the principal hubs for tourism and transportation in the Isaan provinces, Khon Kaen is also the region's central gateway offering convenient links to all the northern and central provinces.

Phu Wiang National Park

One of the more pristine natural attractions in the region, this National Park is shaped like a huge volcano. The site is the perfect place for nature lovers to explore virgin forests, and some intriguing archeological sites, which include fossil remains of an herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs. Moreover, a Buddha image carved into face of a steep hill, which has been dated back to the Dvaravati period can be seen.

Ubolrat Dam

Easily accessible, Ubolrat Dam can be reached by bus and hired car. This dam is the largest multi-sided dam in the Northeast and was created to generate electricity for eight adjoining provinces. Here recreational facilities have been constructed by locals on one of the banks of the reservoir, and offer swimming, water scooters, banana boats, rowboats and food stalls.

Khon Kaen National Museum

Recognized as the one of the more remarkable museums in the northeastern region, the museum offers some of the finest Khmer artifacts found outside of Cambodia. Exhibition includes a comprehensive sampling of archeological discoveries in the region. An interesting collection of Ban Chiang and Dvaravati artifacts can also be discovered.
