Overview of the Central Region


A fertile area in the very heart of Thailand, the central region is composed of 22provinces. It is in the central region where Bangkok, the kingdom's capital, is located. The region is considered the rice bowl of Thailand as it has the most rice farming in Thailand. It is the perfect region for cultivation of rice and other agricultural produce.

The central plain area has a warm tropical climate. There are three seasons: summer, rainy and winter.

In the central region are located several significant historical sites which relate to the modern history of the Kingdom. Most important historical evidence is in Ayutthaya province, the ancient capital of Thailand where the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site-Ayutthaya Historical Park is situated. The glory of Ayutthaya has passed from generation through generation to the present Rattanakosin period.

Another popular tourist destination is Kanchanaburi, one of the most beautiful province with a very delightful landscape. It is well-known for the 'Death Railway' and the 'Bridge over the River Kwai.' The province also has numerous other places of interest for the nature loving visitors who want to spend longer time here.

The central region is also the center for the country's tourism development in various ways. With an efficient road system, the central region is very accessible by car and is the place from which most tourists set off on their journey further to other regions.

People in the central region are friendly, cheerful and energetic. They speak the standard Thai language, but the dialect may be slightly different from province to province.
